I’m Robert Ryan, and I’m a writer: high fantasy, heroic fantasy, epic fantasy – even old-school sword and sorcery.
I could take the tried and trusted path of providing biographical information, such as where I was born, where I live, what I call my pets, and then top it off with an amusing and quirky anecdote.
But I won’t.
Instead, I’ll tell you who I really am.
They say that you can judge a man by his enemies. I think you can tell even more by the books that he loves.
These are a few that inspire me, move me, interest me, entertain me, educate me and so much more.
The Lord of the Rings. The one high fantasy to rule them all. Rotondo on Racing Pigeons. The Belgariad. Sorry Mr. Eddings, your later books aren’t quite as charming. Delia Smith’s Complete Cookery Course. Watership Down. The Elfstones of Shannara. Your finest epic fantasy ever, Mr. Brooks. Longbow. Robert Hardy, the author, is better known as the Minister of Magic in the Harry Potter movies. The Dark is Rising Sequence. The Walking Drum. King Solomon’s Mines. H. Rider Haggard wrote epic fantasy long before it was called that. Beowulf. The Man from Snowy River. The King’s English. All Creatures Great and Small. Robert Hardy played Siegfried in the TV series before anyone ever uttered “expelliarmus!” Joy of Gardening. How to Write Best Selling Fiction. Mr. Koontz – your advice is unsurpassed, and your defense of popular fiction is inspiring. Advanced Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan. The Silmarillion.
There. I got through that without telling a quirky story. Sort of.
For those who really want biographical information, I’m Australian. I’m a qualified Tai Chi, Kung Fu and Qigong instructor. I don’t have any pets at the moment, but my first as a little boy was a dog called Rusty. I still miss him.
